There’s so much to like about a masterful change-up. First is the inherent value of “outsmarting” the opposing hitter. That is always fun. It’s just as satisfying as blowing a 100 mph by someone (and even better when that kind of fastball is the set-up pitch). It’s also a pitch that takes an ungodly amount of practice and patience to learn how to throw. You have to basically mimic the arm motion of your fastball and correspond with a weird-ass-feeling release. Johan Santana is the current master, but my favorite was always Pedro, whose change-up dipped in and down on right handed hitters making it borderline un-hittable if placed right. Even if you go the timing, following the direction was a nightmare.
God, I really love great pitchers
